# Swatch > Swatch checks text and background color contrast against WCAG, shows the closest colors that pass, and builds a full 50-950 palette from any color. Runs in your browser, no account. Swatch is a web tool from Clawhard Studio for choosing colors that people can actually read. Pick a text color and a background and Swatch shows the exact WCAG 2.x contrast ratio, pass or fail for AA and AAA at normal and large text and for UI components, and the APCA Lc score as extra guidance. If a pair fails it suggests the nearest text color or background that passes, keeping the hue. It can also turn one brand color into a full 11-step scale (50 to 950) with contrast notes, as CSS variables, a Tailwind block or JSON. Everything runs in the browser. The same checks are available to AI assistants through an MCP server and a JSON API. - URL: https://swatch.clawhard.com/ - Made by: [Clawhard Studio](https://clawhard.com), an AI-powered studio. Open https://swatch.clawhard.com and type or pick a text color and a background (or open https://swatch.clawhard.com/?fg=767676&bg=ffffff). 2. Read the contrast ratio and the AA and AAA results. Tap a suggested color to apply it. 3. Switch to Palette to build a 50 to 950 scale from any color and copy it as CSS, Tailwind or JSON. 4. Copy the result, save the card or copy a link to share. ## Use it from an AI assistant or script - `GET https://swatch.clawhard.com/api/v1/check_contrast`: Use when you pick, review or generate UI colors and need an exact accessibility answer. Computes the WCAG 2.x contrast ratio of a text color on a background (never guess ratios, LLMs get them wrong) and returns pass or fail for AA and AAA at normal and large text, the 3:1 UI-component rule, and the APCA Lc score. Accepts hex (#rgb, #rrggbb, #rrggbbaa), rgb(), hsl(), hwb(), oklch() and CSS color names. Translucent colors are blended first. - `GET https://swatch.clawhard.com/api/v1/fix_contrast`: Use when a color pair fails contrast and you need a replacement that still looks like the original. Returns the nearest passing text color (background fixed) and the nearest passing background (text fixed), keeping hue and changing only lightness, with the new exact ratios. Targets: AA (4.5:1 normal text, default), AAA (7:1), AA-large (3:1 large text), ui (3:1 icons and borders). If the pair already passes it says so. - `GET https://swatch.clawhard.com/api/v1/pick_text_color`: Use when you place text or an icon on a colored surface (button, badge, chip, tag, hero) and need the readable text color. Returns whichever of black or white has the higher contrast ratio, both ratios, the grade, and a softer near-black or near-white option that still passes AA. - `GET https://swatch.clawhard.com/api/v1/make_scale`: Use when you need a design-token palette from a brand color. Generates an 11-step scale (50, 100 ... 950) in OKLCH so steps look evenly spaced, with your exact color kept as the closest step. Returns each step's hex, contrast on white and black, the best text color on it, and ready-to-paste CSS variables, a Tailwind colors block and JSON. - `GET https://swatch.clawhard.com/api/v1/convert_color`: Use when you need the same color in another CSS format, or a color name turned into a value. Returns hex, rgb(), hsl(), oklch(), relative luminance and the nearest CSS color name. Accepts hex, rgb(), hsl(), hwb(), oklch() and CSS names. - `POST https://swatch.clawhard.com/api/v1/check_pairs`: Use to audit a whole UI or design-token set in one call. Takes up to 50 pairs and returns each pair's ratio, grade and AA/AAA results, plus how many fail AA for normal text. Ideal after you generate a theme or dark mode and want every text-on-surface pair verified. - Contrast: `https://swatch.clawhard.com/?fg=767676&bg=ffffff` (hex without #) - Palette: `https://swatch.clawhard.com/?tab=palette&color=ff5a1f&name=brand` ## Limits - WCAG 2.x contrast is the legal standard today; APCA is shown as extra guidance and is not part of WCAG conformance. - Contrast on gradients, images and semi-transparent layers over varied backgrounds must be checked at the worst spot yourself. - Color names follow the CSS list. Translucent colors are blended over the background, and the background over white. - API: rate limited per client, up to 50 pairs per call. ## Privacy - Swatch runs in your browser. The colors you type are not uploaded and there is no account. - The API and MCP tools compute the answer from the colors you send and do not store them. ## Plans - Swatch: no payment needed. Full tool in the browser. No account. ## Common questions **What contrast ratio do I need for accessible text?** WCAG 2.2 level AA needs 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text (24px, or 18.66px bold) and for UI components like icons and input borders. Level AAA needs 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text. Swatch shows all of these for any pair. **Does #777777 on white pass AA?** No. #777777 on white is 4.48:1, just under 4.5:1. #767676 is the lightest gray that passes AA on white, at 4.54:1. **What is APCA and is it in WCAG?** APCA (Lc score) is a newer perceptual contrast method being studied for WCAG 3. The WCAG 3 draft has not chosen a contrast algorithm yet, so WCAG 2.x ratios are still the standard. Swatch shows APCA as extra guidance on text size and weight. **How does Swatch suggest a passing color?** It keeps the hue and chroma and moves only the lightness (in OKLCH) to the nearest value that reaches the target, so the fixed color still looks like your original. **How do I make a palette from one color?** Open the Palette tab, enter your brand color and Swatch builds an 11-step scale from 50 to 950 with your color kept as the nearest step, plus contrast notes and CSS, Tailwind or JSON to copy. **Can an AI assistant use Swatch?** Yes. Add the MCP server https://swatch.clawhard.com/mcp (tools swatch_check_contrast, swatch_fix_contrast, swatch_pick_text_color, swatch_make_scale, swatch_convert_color, swatch_check_pairs) or call the JSON API described at /openapi.json. ## More from the studio - [Clawhard Studio home](https://clawhard.com/): all tools - [Studio llms.txt](https://clawhard.com/llms.txt) and [llms-full.txt](https://clawhard.com/llms-full.txt) - [Studio MCP server](https://mcp.clawhard.com/mcp)
